So my friend Tina asked me to find out how Gabriel would describe what being "in love" feels like...and dutifully, I asked him last night before bedtime. Here's our conversation:
Gabe: "It feels sad Mom."
Instantly, I am concerned.
Me: "What do you mean you feel sad? Being in love with someone makes you sad?"
Gabe: "I'm so sad that I can't buy Kendall a ring."
I laugh (relieved).
Me: "Why do want to buy her a ring, honey?"
Sofia interjects: "She gets a diamond Gabe."
What the heck? WHERE do my darling children pick these things up? I am certain I have never used these words or explained proposals to my kids (or in the presence of the kids).
Me to Sofia: "Where did you hear the word diamond?"
Sofia: "I just know Mom."
Of course she does. :D My kids know everything, and they know it with attitude. haha! (Oh, the future shall be interesting!)
Sooooo, rad Mommy that I am, after writing Gabe's thank-you cards and after writing the teachers' thank-you notes, I run to the store to find rings for Kendall and Sofia. They are not diamonds, but as I explained to Sofia this morning: diamonds are overrated, and she doesn't have to wait for a prince to get her a ring. She can get it herself or her sweet Mommy and Daddy will get one for her when she's good.
(Sidebar: She's doing phenomenally well with potty training! Last night, she insisted on sleeping with no pull-up on. She said, "I promise I won't pee in the bed, Mom." I had to explain that it was okay if she has accidents. Accidents are how you learn!)
Anyway, Gabe was thrilled that I got Sofia and Kendall pretty rings with Ariel on them (from the Little Mermaid) that double as awesome bath toys -- they squirt water from the center! Teehee!
So, Tina, there you have it! Thanks for giving me the question that served as today's blog entry and yet another incredibly entertaining experience with my kids. I always expect the kids to have such simple explanations, and they always surprise me! Tim was coaching Gabriel this morning -- "You make sure you tell Kendall she's your favorite girlfriend." Lord have mercy! I hope none of the other girls are sad they didn't get rings. At least they get cupcakes, courtesy of the local grocery store -- Safeway! They're making these totally cool cupcake cakes now that look like way too much work for me, but I'm happy to pay $20 to get the kids one on their last day at daycare! I kinda wanted to get myself an Ariel ring...guess I'll have to go back to Safeway! :D

Your kids are amazing! I can just picture the wheels turning in their cute little heads when they are thinking so hard and figuring out how the world works! Love y'all.
