Baby Doll Needs a WHAT?

Seems like so many conversations I play over and over in my head (in a sometimes futile effort to remember for the blog) begin in the car ride in the mornings...here's another funny one from this morning:

I had just called Tim to ask him a question when Sofia piped up from the back seat:
Mom? Can you call Santa?
Me: Hunh? Um, sure. What do you want to say to Santa?
Fia: Oh. I want to ask him for a crib for my baby doll.
Me: Okay, which baby doll?
Fia: Isabela -- and she also needs a house.
Me: She has a house, honey; she has our house.
Fia: Noooo. She needs her own, very special house in the backyard.
Me: Oh, well, I just tried, but the line is busy. Let's try again later. Or maybe Daddy can take you to the mall to see Santa after work.
Fia: OKAY!

Oh my God. My child wants one of those massive plastic houses for the backyard -- for her babydoll! Seriously. How did she get to be so high-maintenance so fast??!! And, why is it so stinking cute? Tim and I are thinking about going on Craig's List to look for one...I am NOT paying full-price for one of those suckers...but Tim, on the other hand, just might if I don't do a preemptive strike by looking for a used one!

What was your favorite toy as a kid? I don't know if I had one...did I, Mom? I was into books, books, books.

Wow - Baby Doll doesn't just need a new pair of shoes! A girl with a taste for the finer things in life. :)

I think my fave toy was my record player. I remember crankin' my mother's 45s & LPs until her ears bled when I was about 5. I'd sing and dance to 'The Wanderer' and 'Leader of the Pack' like I was a Shirelle. :)

You might want to also try www.freecycle.org. It's a great way to get stuff and help the environment. Watch out, though--people put a lot of weird stuff up there, too!

My childhood best friend had the full Barbie universe: pink car, big house, etc. I had one or two Barbie's but ALWAYS wanted to play with her stuff when I was at her house. She was bored by it, I guess because it was always there. Now I look back and wonder why that was so fascinating to me.

Sofia knows what she wants! She's a doll herself! You definitely loved your books, Kristinn, but you also had a Strawberry Shortcake doll that Grandma Leonhart gave you (I think it was Strawberry Shortcake) that you slept with for a long time. My favorite toy was a stuffed bear my grandfather had given me. He gave all of us grandkids a bear when we were born, and I had mine for years- he was all worn with his fur rubbing off in places, but I loved that bear. Then one Christmas I got a stuffed white cat and had just seen the movie Thomasina, so I named my cat that, and she went with me everywhere. The bear had been retired by then...
